Work and Fun

I didn’t get any blog text written last week and I took some mental effort to get in the mood to write. For the last two weeks I’ve been focusing on learning React.js while building a web service and it’s been surprisingly fun and fulfilling.

Work Habit Analysis

I came across Memory app last week and I’ve been trying it out a bit. The app tracks what applications you’re using and what sites you’re browsing and spending time in and collects daily and weekly overviews about your time spend. The data can be used for tracking how much time you spend working in various projects or for various customers, but I also found it quite interesting to just see if I’m spending my time as I thought I’d spend it. I noticed I had build a habit on staying in the Hub quite late – until 22 or so – so I’ve now been trying to leave earlier to get back into more morning work focused rhythm. Based on the data I’ve been able to put 8 to 12 hours most days for learning web development and other interesting things and I’m quite happy with the statistics.

If you connect the Memory service with your laptop, mobile phones and other apps it can provide you a very comprehensive analysis about the apps you use, pages you visit and places you have physically been. So the privacy is also a concern with these kind of apps. It’s good the privacy aspects of the service are stated clearly in the web and I think they are in the usual ok level, but I’d need all my data to be completely encrypted and only accessible by me to make me feel comfortable using these kind of services in the long run. Two-factor authentication support would also be nice. But for a short work/life habit analysis the app was great.

Fun

Even if my trip to Corralejo – and other places during the first half of 2017 – is mostly about learning web dev there is time for having some fun with the fellows at the Hub and exploring the surroundings. We’ve had few dinners arranged by coworkers and we also had a presentation – with some snack and drinks provided by the house – last Friday about the basics of web video streaming. I’ve also tried sup boarding couple of times with my Finnish flat mates and I’m planning to try surfing next week. Apparently Fuerteventura is an exceptionally great place for surfing so I guess I just need to get on with it and try it out while I’m still here.

It’s still open whether I’m going to stay here for the second month or not, but I have to decide it within next few days. The city and it’s immediate surroundings provide limited amount of things to do and see – unless you’re a surfer – but there are some interesting sights and places to see in the nearby towns so I’m quite sure I wouldn’t find Corralejo too boring even if I stayed here for another month.
