Ribs, Crackle, Pop
I mentioned last week I hurt my ribs a bit while surfing. Well, the pain didn’t go away within a week so I went to the local medical centre to get a professional diagnose. Even if the surfers are regular customers also in the medical centre and their issues are usually dealt with pain killers and Bepanthen the doctor suggested to take x-ray images. The x-rays revealed I had a broken rib and based on my understanding – the doctor’s English was a bit limited – the tip of the 7th rib (counted from up) on left side was broken, but in such a way that it should heal by itself within few weeks.
It was good to get the confirmation for my suspicions even if my carefully designed training plan for the first half of the 2017 is now completely trashed. I need to avoid any physical stress for at least two more weeks and I cancelled the remaining surfing sessions I had already paid for; luckily the staff in Homegrown surf school were very helpful and supportive and refunded the unused surf lessons.
Well, life is life and yesterday I celebrated my first broken ribs by going to a fancy looking – well, touristy at least – restaurant to eat some ribs :). One nice detail of this episode was that the medical care was completely free since Canary Islands are part of Spain and EU and I have the European Health Insurance Card.
Next Winner: Malta
It’s been nice to stay here in Corralejo, but after this month it’s time to move on. I wanted to find a good coworking location from Europe or nearby since I’m planning to go to central Europe on May when the weather should be there quite nice already. I ended up googling about Malta and it seems to provide quite a lot for digital nomads and alike.
Based on my investigations the weather should be nice in Malta on April and it’s not the most touristy season so the accommodation and other service prices should be in normal level. There were also few interesting coworking places and the coworking scene in general seem to be on rise there (well, like in everywhere). I also found few good short term rental Facebook groups so it should be easy to find decently priced accommodation. There should be also enough things to see and experience and based on the images the city feels quite cozy and approachable.
I like Airbnb, but recently it has become a less and less attractive service to rent apartments since the prices there are often high partly due to the somewhat large cut Airbnb takes. It seems in many places there are two markets now: the touristy market via holiday rental sites and agencies and Airbnb and the local market available via Facebook groups, various web sites and local rental agencies. The prices in the local market can be half compared to the prices in the tourist market.
I’ll also make a quick stop in Madrid after leaving Fuerteventura. There didn’t seem to be decently priced fast flight options from Fuerteventura to Malta so I decided to stay in Madrid for two nights. Madrid has been quite high on my nomad travel list anyways so it’s nice to spend few days there and see how I like the city.
